Beating Heart

As I leaned against the door I could faintly hear Perrie’s voice screaming. I can understand the words she’s saying, and honestly they have a lot of heart behind them. But what exactly is she referring to? I let out a sigh as I lean up and walk back over to the bed. This room is mostly empty, dust taking up most of the floor space.

I wonder what this house has to hide, so far I’ve met two really nice people – yet I am being locked away in a bedroom. Perhaps there’s a good reasoning behind it. I hear the sound of footsteps pass the door, it could be Perrie leaving her argument successfully.

My eyes trail over to the boarded window – why could they be hiding from the outside world? I for one have never been too afraid of what lies in the woods out there, but I guess that has a lot to do with a little bit of experience there. Maybe their fear is far beyond the trees and mountains, what if they were afraid of the public. Or more simply, possibly they just don’t like the light.

As my curious mind extends, I start to think – who exactly does they even refer to? By the small glimpse of the house I’ve seen, it’s pretty big – greatly enough room for more than two people.

Niall and Perrie have similar features, pale skin and blue eyes like my own, however their accents are much different, so I guess they aren’t related in any way. My head is aching, I guess I need to stop overthinking this all and just relax myself, get some sleep maybe?

I lay down on my side, sliding my legs under the cover as I attempt to get comfortable. The mattress isn’t entirely horrible, at least it’s not rock hard. Just as I close my eyes, I hear a few knocks on the door. I let out a soft sigh, I guess it’s better than being alone.

The door opens and I’m relieved to see Niall. He gives me a smile as he shuts the door and walks across the room to me. “Hey love, everything alright?” He asks, furrowing his eyebrows as he stands over me. “Yeah, just.. tired.” I mumble back a reply, quite surprised that I could gather enough strength to speak to him.

“Are you feeling well?” Niall presses his hand to my forehead, check my temperature. “You’re rather warm.” He adds in a mutter. I sniff my nose a few times, I’m not sure if anything is wrong with me or not. Niall gives me a gentle smile as he stares down at me. His eyes are so kind and light, it’s good to know somebody cares.

The second Niall parts his lips I begin to hear heavy stomping above me. He glances up towards the ceiling for a short moment before his eyes fall back on mine. He lets out a huff as he kneels down, taking my hand in both of his. “Just.. brace yourself.” He whispers with a light gulp.

I was about to ask why, or what was going to happen.. but before I could even decide on my question, a loud crashing sound erupts above us. I sharply gasp as it’s followed by another shatter.

“What-what is that?” I stutter out, squeezing Niall’s hand tight. I’m used to screaming and loud slams though, I guess it’s just different to hear it here – so far I’ve only heard one loud noise and a bit of yelling. I guess it was the first of many.

“Don’t worry about it.. try to ignore whatever you hear.” He tells me with a convincing smile. I reply with a nod – I guess he will tell me what I need to know, and maybe that is none of my concern – there’s somethings we just don’t need to know. “You’ll figure it out.. on your own, unfortunately.” Niall adds as he leans in to me, pressing his lips against my forehead.

“Relax, don’t worry about it. Take a nap. I’ll come back in a few hours.” He assures me as he stands, his eyes finding mine again. He gives my hand a tight grasp before letting it go. He turns on his heel and heads back to the door.

My brain is screaming at me, telling me to ask this – but my heart is pressuring me, and it won’t give me enough courage.

“Wait.. Niall?” I say, surprising myself more than I did him I’m sure. He looks over his shoulder, raising his eyebrows at me. “What if.. what if I need.. to go to.. the bathroom, or.. or I need you.. to talk to me?” I ask nervously, my words cut up and my thoughts now jumbled.

“Just come to the door and knock on it, I’ll hear you. If I don’t come right away, just call my name a few times. Don’t be afraid to speak.” He informs on what to do and I gladly thank him mentally for that.

“Okay.” I sigh out my response as he gives me one final smile. He exits the room, gently shutting the door behind him. I wonder if the door is locked? I surely won’t be leaving anytime soon, or attempting to escape – I’m too afraid of what lies in the dark end of the hallway.
